CMS announced yesterday that lower prices for ten high-cost drugs under Medicare Part D have been negotiated. The new pricing will take effect on January 1, 2026, delivering substantial savings for Medicare beneficiaries and taxpayers across the United States.

“This is a monumental first step in addressing high prescription drug costs” said Ann Woloson, Executive Director of Consumers for Affordable Health Care. Woloson added “Tens of thousands of Mainers will benefit from price negotiation under Medicare Part D. This marks a significant victory for patients and families nationwide, especially in states like Maine, where the burden of high drug costs has been deeply felt. Our hope is that additional savings and relief from high drug costs will be achieved for all, sooner than later.”

“While actions have been taken to improve access to health coverage in Maine, too many Mainers continue to struggle with the cost of health care and with medical debt. We all deserve to take care of our health without financial stress or worry,” said Ann Woloson, Executive Director of Consumers for Affordable Health Care. “Mainers have made it clear: establishing transparent hospital prices is a responsible path forward to address high hospital costs.

Consumers for Affordable Health Care (CAHC) is pleased to share that Richard Evans, MD has received the American Medical Association (AMA) Award for Outstanding Government Service.

Ann Woloson, Executive Director at CAHC added “Dr. Evans is an incredible individual and widely respected by many in Maine for his tireless work throughout his career to improve access to health care for vulnerable populations, for which we are truly grateful.”

Press Release: The Task Force to Evaluate the Impact of Facility Fees on Patients has released its report with recommendations to the Legislature regarding policies related to facility fee charges.

Chuck Bell, Program Director with Consumer Reports, discussed the issue of medical debt, its causes, and possible solutions with Maine policy makers on Thursday. “Medical debt undermines the ability of individuals and households to have stable incomes, avoid financial stress and poverty, and achieve economic stability,” declared Bell. He added, “Medical debt in itself can cause sickness.”

Maine's Office of Affordable Health Care is required to convene an annual public hearing on cost trends and barriers to health care affordability and provide an opportunity for public comment.
