-2002 Annual Conference-
Universal Health Care in Maine: Time For Action!

Consumers for Affordable Health Care (CAHC) hosted a very timely and exciting conference this Fall to explore the viability of a Universal Health Care system for the state of Maine. Consumers for Affordable Health Care is a Maine's largest coalition whose mission is to advocate for a universal health care system that provides affordable, comprehensive, quality health care coverage to all Maine citizens regardless of their ability to pay. CAHC's members include numerous organizations including labor, church, health care providers, women's, children's, and others. It also includes a growing number of small businesses and individual members.

The conference brought together consumers, small businesses, health care providers, policymakers and other interested parties to explore the formation of a Universally available system of care. The morning was dedicated to speakers presenting information on: the viability of a Universal Coverage System on a state level; the human and economic impact of the uninsured; and, debunking myths about the Canadian health care system. This was followed by a Gubernatorial panel giving candidates the opportunity to voice their views on universal health care coverage. The afternoon was dedicated to action planning workshops, including: A Universal Plan for Maine; Prescription Drugs-What happened to the Maine Rx. Program?, Making Sure the Maine Small Business Health Plan Becomes a Reality, and others. Scholarships, child and elder care stipends as well as travel stipends were made available. The conference was held on September 23, 2002 at the Augusta Civic Center.
