Job Opening - Communications Coordinator

Consumers for Affordable Health Care, a non-profit organization that advocates for affordable, quality health care for all Maine people, is seeking a Communications Coordinator. This professional position, working under the direct supervision of the Executive Director and closely with the organization's other Directors, will be responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive communications and marketing plan to help the organization effectively develop and communicate our policy messages to key audiences, raise the profile of the organization and its services and policy priorities, and engage a broad audience of Maine people.

Responsibilities include:

  • Development of a comprehensive communications and marketing plan for the organization
  • Serving as a critical member of the organization's communications team, including providing advice on ways to enhance our communication with the public, frame messages, simplify language to make issues more accessible to the general public, and increase visibility of our issues
  • Identifying additional financial and technical resources to advance and sustain the communication plan and position.

Media Relations
Direct media relations for the organization including:

  • Writing and strategically distributing news releases, opinion pieces, and other media communications materials;
  • Placing stories in appropriate national, local and online outlets;
  • Setting up opportunities for staff to appear on radio, TV, or before editorial boards;
  • Conduct and coordinate press events;
  • Build and maintain relationships with key journalists and media outlets;
  • Monitor and store media coverage of CAHC and our issue areas.

Organizational Communications
Direct organizational communications efforts including:

  • Preparation and dissemination of communication materials and publications, including newsletters, annual report, brochures, promotional and fundraising materials
  • Serving as a spokesperson for the organization, including participating in events to inform donors, partners, the public, and policymakers about the work of the organization
  • Reviewing program and policy documents, and working, as part of a team, to create educational materials that are easy to read and understand, as well as creating a consistent "brand" for the organization
  • Editing and proofreading documents prepared by Program & Policy staff
  • Designing and producing marketing materials for events
  • Oversight of the website, including contributing to strategy, design, and content development
  • Participating in and developing new ways to communicate advocacy opportunities, including "action alerts" and other activist tools.

Requirements:

Candidates must be highly organized and have demonstrated excellent writing and oral communication skills, as well as editing skills. Experience with a broad range of media and at least two years experience in journalism, nonprofit communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field is required. This position requires the ability to articulate information to other professionals and laypeople, which means the person must gain a substantive understanding of the main issues we work on. The ability to complete multiple assignments under tight time constraints and deadlines is a must. The ideal candidate will be a proactive, self-starter, who is highly motivated and able to work well alone and in a team setting. Candidates must have a commitment to social and economic justice in Maine. Working knowledge of word processing, and spreadsheet programs (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel) is required. Fluency with graphic design/desktop publishing and website development software such as Adobe PageMaker, Photoshop, or DreamWeaver is a plus. An understanding of public and private health insurance programs and experience working with diverse constituencies is a plus. Some statewide travel may be required. Occasional evening and weekend availability may be required.
